Heap leaching has become the preferred method of recovering minerals from low-grade ore from open-pit mines. Copper, gold, silver, and other metals are most common. The metal deposits are dissolved by chemicals applied to the top of the heap of ore, which eventually leaches to the bottom of the pile. Here a geomembrane liner captures the solution preventing it from migrating into the ground, before directing the solution by gravity to a collection system. The solution is sent to a refinery where the metal can be precipitated out and the solution sent back to the heap to be used again to dissolve more metal.
Disadvantages of Tailings Stockpiling
1. Since the tailings not only contain useful components such as re-separable metal ores and non-metal ores but also the non-re-separable tailings have many uses, so the storage of tailings will cause waste of useful components;
2. The storage of tailings not only occupies a large amount of cultivated land, but also easily causes environmental pollution, soil erosion, and vegetation damage in the mining area;
3. Tailings are easy to flow and collapse when they are stored, causing preparation damage and injury accidents. Especially in the rainy season, it is very easy to cause collapse and landslides. The tailings dam body is high, and there are hidden dangers of unsafety;
4. The composition of tailings and residual beneficiation agents seriously damages the ecological environment, especially the tailings containing heavy metals. The acid water produced by sulfide will further leach heavy metals, and the loss of heavy metals will cause harm to the entire ecological environment.
