Geomembrane is a very low permeability synthetic membrane liner or barrier used with any geotechnical engineering-related material so on control fluid (or gas) migration in a human-made project, structure, or system.
Geomembranes are often included as part of the engineered barrier system for modern landfills (Rowe, 2001). As defined in ASTM D4439-00, a geomembrane is ‘‘an impermeable membrane used with foundation, soil, rock earth or any other geotechnical engineering-related material as an integral part of a man-made project, structure or system’’. There are various types of geomembranes including polyvinyl chloride (PVC), chlorinated polyethylene (CPE), chlorosulphonated polyethylene (CSPE), ethylene-propylene rubber (EPDM), polypropylene (PP), linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE), medium-density polyethylene (MDPE) and, more recently, the bituminous geomembrane. It is important to note that the so-called HDPE geomembranes discussed in this article are in reality MDPE resin density; but, with more carbon black the density of the geomembrane itself falls within the high-density range defined by ASTM D 883.
A landfill is a very designed and managed structure for the final disposal of waste. The waste material is placed in earthen cells where it is isolated from the environment (groundwater, rain, air, and animals) with a bottom liner and a top covering of soil. Why do we need geomembrane in a landfill project?

Corrosion resistance. As we know, there is too much corrosive liquid in the landfill, the geomembrane is not so thick but it can resist the polluted liquid seepage. So geomembrane plays a heavy role in protecting the earth.
Excellent environmental stress cracking resistance property. If you buy a geomembrane made of 100% virgin materials, it can serve over 60 years.
High tensile strength and elongation. No matter it is used in landfill projects or any other environmental field, The project will have a significant impact on the environment
Low cost and easy installation for the seepage control project. What if you need the concrete to build a landfill project? That will be a huge project. Not to mention the money, it will take a long time to finish the construction.
So a landfill project with a geomembrane moves tons of municipal waste coming daily from municipalities, keeping the living area clean and in order.
The geomembranes can avoid tons of CO2 that are caused by open dumpsites, also SO2 and NO2. Collecting thousands of tons of leachate which would have been infiltrated into the soil.
HDPE geomembranes are available in different thicknesses to suit the type of application. Both the top and bottom surfaces of the geomembrane are usually smooth. Special polymeric geomembranes with textured surfaces are also available, but, for use in certain situations, such as steep embankments.
1.0mm, 1.5mm, 2.0mm HDPE geotechnical film is used in landfills and other pollution prevention fields. The quality requirements for the geomembrane are high new material products.
